Interior fit-out specialist and contract management company, Peter Craig UK, has bought a second Striebig vertical panel saw on the strength of the reliability of an older version used for the past 13 years.

Established in 1978 as a bespoke joinery and manufacturing business, Peter Craig UK has grown to offer an extensive range of design and manufacturing services to various industry sectors across the UK including hospitality, office and commercial, retail and private housing.

Amongst the Edinburgh company’s impressive customer base are Goldsmiths, Mappin & Webb, Goretex and British Trust Hotels, and it’s the preferred supplier of bespoke furniture to major Scottish house builder, Applecross.

The company’s commercial manager, Scott MacDonald, said: “In the 13 or so years we have been using the original Striebig, it has only lost 1/2mm of accuracy and we have not had any major technical problems with it. Because of its proven build quality and reliability we had no hesitation in buying a second as part of our push for year on year growth.”

Fully Automatic Striebig Control

Its new 6m long fully-automatic Striebig Control 6224, the largest version in the range, was supplied and installed by Deral Ltd, of Airdrie, which represents T.M. Machinery Sales, the UK distributor of Striebig saws, in Scotland. It can handle panels up to a maximum size of 5,300mm x 2,240mm and has a depth of cut of 80mm.

The Control is used to size MDF, plywood and other sheet material, as well as pieces of hardwood used as battens.

It offers every possible option for automatic sawing operations. With manual feeding of the saw unit eliminated, the operator’s job is made easier, giving him ample time to prepare the next sawing job. Ease of operation is provided by a PLC control system, with any operating errors displayed so that they can be immediately corrected.

Numerous automatic procedures can be carried out by the press of a button including locking and releasing the beam saw, setting the horizontal cutting height, plunging and swivelling the motor, locking the support rollers during sawing and fine saw blade adjustment.

An infinitely variable feed speed can be adjusted to suit every kind of material. Sawing errors that may occur as a result of different feed speeds required when cutting ‘sensitive’ materials are therefore eliminated.

Fitted as standard is the TRK dust and chips extraction system that ensures dust levels are kept well below permitted European limits, and automatic moving backing support.

“The saw’s operator likes the Control’s advanced features, particularly the pneumatically powered cutting head, as it makes his job much easier,” said Mr MacDonald.

“It’s a very versatile saw that we can use with both softwood panels and hardwood components. Although we originally bought it as a replacement, we have decided to keep the older saw on as a back-up, which will be a big advantage in busy periods. With its modern design the Control looks extremely impressive in the workshop.”
